How Fit Do You Need To Be To Start Marathon Training?
Athlete Profiles, July 10, 2026
Wondering if you're fit enough to start marathon training? In this article, Coach Ray explains the fitness foundation he recommends before beginning marathon-specific training, why you don't need to be marathon-ready on day one, and how progressive training builds the endurance and confidence needed for 42.2km. Learn why consistency, not perfection, is the key to successfully preparing for your first or next marathon.
Once you've decided a marathon might be possible, the next question usually follows quickly:
"Am I actually fit enough to start training?"
It's a question that stops many runners before they even begin.
They worry they're too slow.
They worry they haven't run enough kilometres.
They worry they need to be fitter before they start following a marathon training plan.
The reality is quite different.
You don't need marathon fitness before you begin marathon training.
That's exactly what the training programme is designed to build.
Marathon Fitness Isn't Built Overnight
One of the biggest misconceptions about marathon training is that you should already be capable of running close to 42.2km before starting.
If that were true, there would be little point in following a structured training plan.
Marathon fitness is developed gradually.
Each training week builds on the one before.
Your endurance improves.
Your aerobic fitness increases.
Your confidence grows.
The goal is to arrive at the start line ready—not to be ready on day one.
What Is A Good Starting Point?
While every runner is different, I generally recommend that athletes can:
- Run comfortably for around 60 minutes continuously.
- Be consistently running at least three times per week.
- Have several months of regular running behind them.
Many runners will have completed a half marathon before progressing to the marathon, but this isn't essential.
What's more important is having a solid aerobic foundation that allows your training to progress safely.
Why Your Aerobic Base Matters
Marathon training is less about speed than many people think.
Success comes from developing an efficient aerobic system.
An aerobic base allows you to:
- Run for longer with less fatigue.
- Recover more effectively between sessions.
- Complete long runs comfortably.
- Handle increasing training loads.
Trying to build marathon fitness without first establishing this foundation often leads to injury, excessive fatigue, or inconsistent training.
More Fitness Isn't Always Better
Some runners delay entering a marathon because they believe they need to become significantly fitter first.
Ironically, waiting often delays the progress they're hoping to make.
Provided you have the basic fitness to begin, your marathon training itself becomes the vehicle that develops your endurance.
There's no need to spend years trying to become "fit enough."
You simply need to start from an appropriate point.
Training Should Match Your Current Ability
No two runners begin marathon training at exactly the same fitness level.
Some athletes may already be comfortable running 90 minutes.
Others may only be comfortable running for an hour.
That's perfectly normal.
A good training programme doesn't force everyone through the same progression.
Instead, it adapts to where you are now and steadily builds towards race day.
Consistency Will Always Win
Many runners overestimate how fit they need to be before they begin.
They underestimate how much consistent training can achieve.
Three or four months of structured, progressive training can transform your fitness.
The athlete who completes their sessions week after week will almost always outperform the athlete who waits for the "perfect time" to begin.
Trust The Process
One of the most rewarding parts of marathon coaching is watching athletes realise they're capable of far more than they imagined.
The runner who once struggled to run for an hour gradually completes:
- Their first two-hour run.
- Their first 30km training run.
- Their first marathon.
Not because they were exceptionally talented.
Because they trusted the process.
Each week builds upon the last.
Small improvements accumulate.
Confidence grows alongside fitness.
Final Thoughts
You don't need to be marathon-ready before starting marathon training.
You simply need a solid running foundation and the willingness to train consistently.
If you can comfortably run for around an hour and are regularly running several times each week, you may already have everything you need to begin your marathon journey.
Don't wait until you feel "fit enough."
The training is what gets you there.
